Port Proximity
Port Highlights
The Port of New York and New Jersey is the gateway to one of the most concentrated and affluent consumer markets in the world. It is the busiest container port on the East Coast — third nationally by total volume, and second in the nation for loaded containers.
The port handled 8.9 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2025, up 2.3% over 2024 — its third-busiest year on record. Loaded volume reached nearly 6.0 million TEUs, up 2.8%, with exports up 6.5%.
Through August 2026 the port moved 5.98 million TEUs, down about 1% from the same period in 2025 — and it claimed the top spot as the nation's busiest cargo gateway in March 2026.
The Port Authority's ExpressRail system posted double-digit growth in 2025, with rail volume up 12.4% over 2024.
The Port Authority is advancing its Port Master Plan 2050 to expand terminal capacity and freight connections, and announced a landmark 33-year lease extension at Maher Terminals in December 2025.
Tangible Progress
Building on the Bayonne Bridge raising and the completed $600 million ExpressRail network, the Port Authority is now advancing the next generation of port infrastructure.
The Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are advancing the Harbor Deepening and Channel Improvement Project, which will deepen and widen the port's navigational channels by an additional five feet — from 50 to 55 feet — to accommodate the next generation of ultra-large vessels.
The Port Authority Board approved a record $45 billion 2026–2035 capital plan, including more than $1.2 billion in private investment to modernize and expand container terminal operations at the seaport.
In December 2025, the Port Authority announced a landmark 33-year lease extension at Maher Terminals, securing long-term terminal capacity.
Implementation of the Port Master Plan 2050 is underway, planning for cargo volumes the Port Authority expects to double or triple by 2050.
